ECM Records HEINER GOEBBELS : WALDEN CD

Walden is a series of musical sketches inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s 1854 book. Created in 1998 for expanded orchestra and narrator, the work combines passages from Thoreau, radio-play-like soundscapes, unusual instruments, avant-garde ideas and elements of popular music. Bob Rutman narrates, uses khoomei singing and plays his own steel cello and bow chimes, while Peter Eötvös conducts. Moving from trip-hop and ambient textures to powerful orchestral passages, the work examines the tension between withdrawal, self-discovery and the outside world.
